4. NEEDLE AND SYRINGE PROGRAMS (NSPS)

what do NSPs do?

NSPs provide:

  • Access to new needles and syringes for injecting drug users to reduce transmission of HIV, Hepatitis C and other blood borne viruses.
  • Information on safer injecting, safer using and safer sex.
  • Condoms and water-based lubricant.
  • Personal sharps containers and facilities for the safe disposal of used needles and syringes.
  • A comfortable, respectful and non-judgmental service environment.
  • Referral to other health and welfare services.
  • Education to the community and other service providers about injecting drug use/user (IDU) issues.
  • Service that responds to the needs of the service user in the most appropriate, friendly and effective way.
IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO CARRY NEW OR USED SYRINGES.

NSPs also provide an initial point of contact for information on drug treatment and other health care services, medical care, counselling and referral, legal assistance, housing and treatment options.
